It is an old truism that “Where there is smoke there is fire.” Over the years as the media have made Hillary into a caricature of a human being. I have to admit to thinking that maybe she is cold and calculating. During the past few weeks however, as we have seen and heard more of this theme and had the opportunity to see the pundits interpret events we ourselves can witness, it is becoming easier to see where the smoke is coming from. It's coming from the people holding the mirrors.
Today, Maureen Dowd, demonstrating her capacities as a journalist, has ripped the curtain from the supposed professionalism at the staff of the New York Times. Unfortunately for her, no one is exposed for their sexism, pettiness, immaturity and general lack of journalistic standards moreso than is she herself. It is astounding. She begins by describing coworkers gathered around a screen watching Hillary's preelection emotional event:
A woman gazing at the screen was grimacing, saying it was bad. Three guys watched it over and over, drawn to the “humanized” Hillary. One reporter who covers security issues cringed. “We are at war,” he said. “Is this how she’ll talk to Kim Jong-il?”
And the crude attacks continue:
Another reporter joked: “That crying really seemed genuine. I’ll bet she spent hours thinking about it beforehand.”
In passing Ms. Dowd gets in a wink and a nod to the Chris Matthews theory that Hillary could have never won her Senate seat without the help of a man (well, her victimhood provided by her husband).
Arguably the most offensive comment among many had to do with the manner in which Ms. Dowd worked in the ambition theme as she looked into the mind of Hillary and revealed the awful truth:
What was moving her so deeply was her recognition that the country was failing to grasp how much it needs her.
But it was all there. All of the hatred and pettiness and jealousy of what is supposed to be one of the greatest journalistic bastions in the free world. A great protector of our free society and informer of our decisions. Unfortunately her inside view makes it look and feel like junior high school. What has happened to these people?
I am not supporting Hillary during the primaries. I believe there are good reasons to support one of the other candidates. But for goodness sakes the woman is a human being for god's sake. She has worked on governmental issues since she was straight out of college. She is clearly intelligent, principled and tough. This article criticizes her for being both weepy and calculating. Please pick a criticism and stick with it. But then I guess the whole article follows that theme established by T. Boone Pickens and Mellon-Scaipes that Hillary and Company are just the devil incarnate. I guess that would account for all of that smoke. Go see for yourself.
