Marion Jones was just sentenced to six months for lying to investigators about a steroid scandal. Scooter Libby lied to investigators about the outing of a covert CIA agent and didn't serve a day.
When Pres. Bush commuted Scooter Libby's sentence, his release stated the following:
"My decision to commute (Mr. Libby's) prison sentence leaves in place a harsh punishment for Mr. Libby. The reputation he gained through his years of public service and professional work in the legal community is forever damaged. His wife and young children have also suffered immensely. He will remain on probation. The significant fines imposed by the judge will remain in effect. The consequences of his felony conviction on his former life as a lawyer, public servant, and private citizen will be long-lasting."
If you just remove the words "legal" and "lawyer", then this same argument could be made for track star Marion Jones, who was just sentenced to 6 months in prison for a steroid scandal. Both Jones and Libby were convicted of lying to investigators, they both were publicly disgraced and they both will endure long-lasting negative impacts. But only one committed a crime that involved placing CIA agents' lives in danger, and he didn't serve a day in jail.
I definitely am not condoning Jones' actions. I just want to point out the double standard that exists for those who are friends of George W. Bush and those who aren't. And, even though the Scooter trial feels like ancient history now, few other Bush scandals so clearly epitomize our president's intrinsic lack of integrity and honesty.
