Earlier this morning I was watching CNN or MSNBC. They were interviewing a White House spokesman about tonight’s State of the Union speech. The spokesman said the focus would be on the economy.
When asked if Bush’s War on Iraq would be addressed - since it is going so well, the spokesman said it would be.
But....
Now the media are reporting five more U.S. soldiers were killed today. Will Bush now have to edit that portion of the speech? How will he handle it?
On the one hand, Bush might ignore the entire war on Iraq. That might not be a bad strategy.
If he does bring it up, what to do about the five lives lost today. He could ignore them. That might get him through the evening. Unlike a press conference, there will be no questions from the audience. But tomorrow’s papers might not be kind.
If Bush does bring up the five lost soldiers, there are several possible memes:
War is hell - these things happen.
Mich McConnell’s, "They volunteered."
Now more than ever we must not let them die in vain. Onward Christian Soldiers!
So, what does your magic eight ball read about tonight’s State of the Union?
