We have so many insightful and powerful diaries written here at Daily Kos. Our diaries inform, inflame, impassion, and even entertain. We Kossacks have strong voices and an even stronger will to be the change we wish to see in this country.
One of the richest, and perhaps most under-appreciated, areas of thought come in the form of comments attached to these diaries. Here at Top Comments we strive to recognize and promote the talent of this community by highlighting outstanding comments found throughout the day by the diarist, and through nominations at made at topcomments at gmail dot com by your fellow Kossacks.
These nominations are subjective, and certainly not complete (as no one can read the complete site on a daily basis!). But hopefully they will serve to shine a light where deserved, and to give the reader a good starting point in finding conversation on the site.
Please come in and make yourself at home! Join us beneath the fold...

On February 2, 1997, Jeremy Sonnenfeld became the first person to bowl three consecutive 300-point games in an approved series by the American Bowling Congress. The youngest Brit to achieve this feat is 12-year-old Elliot John Crosby. They are, of course, not to be confused with Frederick "Fiery Fred" Trueman, the first bowler to take 300 wickets in test cricket on August 13, 1964.

BOLE is a language spoken in Yobe and Gombe States of northeastern Nigeria. About 250-300,000 people speak BOLE, making it among the largest languages in the region, perhaps surpassed only by its linguistic cousin HAUSA, the dominant language of all northern Nigeria and the sub-Saharan language with the most native speakers, and KANURI, the historically dominant language of northeastern Nigeria over the past few centuries. BOLE is a member of the Chadic Language family, and belongs to the same main sub-branch of that family as Hausa, though linguistically Bole and Hausa are probably no more closely related than, say, English and French.
The BOLE PEOPLE have played a prominent role in the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-independence periods of Nigeria. The EMIR OF FIKA, the paramount figure in the traditional Bole ruling hierarchy, has, for a long period, occupied one of the preeminent traditional royal positions of northern Nigeria. Many individuals from the Bole community have risen to prominent positions in Nigerian politics, commerce, education, and media. – The Bole Language Page

Via everyone's favorite PBS catch-all of arcane Americana, Antiques Roadshow, this bowl was hand-carved by a wounded member of the Massachusetts Volunteers on the battlefield at Antietam. The bowl was presented by the soldier to his father-in-law. The high relief carving on the front of a crest reading "UNION" makes it particularly valuable, as does the artist's inclusion of his unit and the battle location. This bowl was appraised for an open-market sale at $3,000.
What exactly one did with this pipe bowl is perhaps up for debate. Watch the appraisal video here.

Here’s a video of a skate bowl filled with balloons:

A bowl cut, also known as a beach cut, pot haircut, chili bowl, or a mushroom cut, is a haircut where the hair is cut short on the sides and back and allowed to grow long on the top, looking as though someone put a bowl on the head and cut off all the visible hair. –wikipedia
Not limited to 1980's America, bowl cuts were apparently also popular in 1920’s Ukraine. The poster above reads, "Son, join the school of Red commanders, and the defense of the Soviet Ukraine will be ensured." Hmm. I may have to put that graphic on a t-shirt.

By Dallasdoc, From symbiosis to parasitism in Jerome a Paris' excellent diary on the Anglo Disease and financial decay.
In my Top Comments diary for Saturday night, PerfectStormer questioned the logic of The Groundhog Day schtick and emeraldmaiden hit back with a witty reply.
From DreamingofBetterDays:
The Raven issues the first dKos citation (that I've ever seen) to a virgin diarist
whose diary "vision" (to the attention of Markos, no less) was a tad . . . ummm . . . abstract shall we say?
Enjoy.
From Neon Vincent:
Hawkjit has some interesting comparative numbers and makes a great observation about our potential First Lady.
From noweasels:
This isn't the usual sort of subject matter for a top comment, but I was so moved by slksfca's lovely remembrance of his mother that I wanted to share it.
