Clicking around the Free Republic website - which I almost never do, I immediately happened upon a little gem that I just had to share.
prayforgeorgewbush.com is "Celebrating 7 Years of God's Faithfulness." At first I thought it was a grammatical error. Does anyone actually hold a religious conviction that it is God who believes in us, as opposed to the conventional Judeo-Christian belief that it is we who have faith in God? Apparently someone does. I looked around and it seems that there is no mistake. George W. Bush is apparently a deity, and God himself merely numbers among the faithful.
Right out of the gate, on the home page graphic, is the line about celebrating 7 years of God's faithfulness.
Isn't that heresy? Well, only if you're Christian, I guess. Are they?
Prayforgeorgewbush.com is a non-denominational, non-partisan ministry dedicated to lifting up President George W. Bush in Prayer as he serves this country as President of the United States.
I guess it doesn't say - although Christ is mentioned throughout the site, and all scripture quotations are cited as taken from The New International Version of the Holy Bible.
Under "Prayer Action Items," I find this:
Pray that in every matter, President Bush will be in the center of God's will for his life and for the life of this nation.
Now, I don't consider myself a Christian these days, but I sure was raised as one, and I find myself somewhat horrified at the notion. We're not asking that God be at the center of Bush's life, but rather that Bush be at the center of God's "will." Wow.
I don't actually have to go hunting for a scripture quote on this matter. It's the First Commandment that I recall:
"I Am the Lord your God.....you shall have no other gods before me."
Sure, I have a hard time naming ALL TEN after that third martini, but the First one? Is the First Commandment the latest casualty of conservative ideology?
Here's another suggested "Prayer Action Item":
Pray that the truth will prevail in all forums.
AMEN to that! Maybe they can get Bush to tell God to support our efforts to strike telecom immunity from the FISA bill.
I'm glad we've got less than a year to go. When 2 + 2 no longer equals 4, splitting headaches are the least of our troubles. But there's a silver lining to all this.
For over four years, God-fearing Americans have gathered to lift up the man whom God has placed in the office of the Presidency (Romans 13:1 "Everyone must submit to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are instituted by God."-HCSB™).
That silver lining is this. The faithful among us, and that includes God Almighty himself, Creator of Heaven and Earth, will be gathering in fellowship to worship a God who in turn worships either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama come January of 2009.
Won't it be wonderful when we can all, in faith and devotion, finally agree?
UPDATE: I misspelled "Manifest" as "Manfest" - HA! I'll leave it that way, because once a progressive is sworn in as President and Gay Marriage is once and for all validated and legalized (can we hope?), I will invite all the Manifest Destiny ideologues to celebrate the Manifest Destiny of "Manfest" Destiny, as God will have decreed, by virtue of its having happened.
