I've heard a lot of news about superdelegates from each state and their possible impact on the nomination of a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. I am not here to advocate for either Democratic candidate in this diary, but to talk about these superdelegates.
In many of the delegate counts we see from the various media outlets, they include totals for each candidate with the inclusion of these superdelegates. While they are not pledged to any one candidate and may therefore change their vote, many of them have already endorsed one of the candidates and are "pledged" by their word to that candidate.
With the race between Senators Clinton and Obama being so tight, I worry that these superdelegates could impose their will over that of the pledged delegates. I think it's just and right that the party awards the pledged delegates to the candidates in a proportional manner for reasons I think are obvious. What troubles me is the idea that these superdelegates could take away my voice, render my vote meaningless and I won't stand for it.
My hope is that the choice for the Democratic nominee does not come down to superdeletes. Either one candidate will have a big enough margin of pledged delegates to render the superdelegate vote meaningless or the Convention adopts a new rule that does not count superdelegates in the tally to see who the nominee will be. My fear is that this will not be the case.
Should it come down to the superdelegates and they choose to against the will of the voters, I am leaving the democratic party. While I will not abandon my liberal values and will still vote for the candidate I believe to the best one for me and my country, I will change my party affiliation to Independent or "Refuse To State". Don't get me wrong, this does not mean I go out and vote for some Ralph Nader-Like candidate, I will still vote for someone I believe in, but I will refuse to participate in any Democratic GOTV campaigns and will not donate money to any Democratic cause or candidate in the future. In short, I refuse to fight for a party that I have no voice in any longer and this issue is a perfect example of why we need to "Crash the Gate".
I realize this is an extreme position. If someone can give me an acceptable alternative action if the worst case scenario happens, and I'm open to it.... but right now, I don't see it.
