Let's call them Pam, Dave, Sally and Fred. That's not their real names, but let's call them that. All four are over 50. All four have been Democrats since casting their vote for Jimmy Carter in 1976 (in one case, since McGovern in 1972). They voted for Mondale, Dukakis and Kerry. They despise Bush, always did, and oppose the Iraq war. They support universal health care and support abortion rights.
And worse, they will vote for McCain if Hillary doesn't get the Democratic nomination
Why?
"I don't know who this Obama person is? Where did he come from? I don't want no President Obama! It sounds like Osama!"
says Sally.
"At least McCain has been around for a while."
says Dave
"I never said I hated Republicans, I just hate Bush"
says Pam
"Bush messed up this country so much, a guy who has been Senator for two years can't fix this up. You need someone who knows what they're doing. If not Hillary, that's McCain"
says Fred.
But, I say, McCain wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years. He wants to invade Iran. At least Obama will end the war.
"Yeah." says Fred, staunchly anti-war since day one, even marching in protests, "But Obama is inexperienced, he'll f*ck it up. We'll get a Democrat who knows what he/she is doing next time"
*"Insert racist comment by Dave here"*
Yes Dave is a racist AND a lifelong liberal Democrat who opposed both Vietnam and Iraq, as well as supporting progressive liberal issues we here support, AND Dave is NOT from the south.
For what it's worth, Obama will lose a great deal of older Democrats. Maybe he doesn't need them...fine...he could win without out, but I've been wondering why with turnout so great and Obama doing so fantastically, why the hell isn't he running away with the general?
Why?
Older Democrats don't go for him. They go to McCain. Perhaps they'll come around before the general (they seem to be coming around in Virgina and Maryland) but we can't get complacent. Hillary supporters are NOT happy their candidate is not winning.
