The VA exit poll shows an interesting pattern:
Republicans way more for Obama than Democrats? Are they "liberal" Republicans?
Apparently not, with Obama doing least well among liberals:
So it can be seen that a number of conservative Republicans/Independents came out in Virginia to vote for Obama. One has to wonder on what basis can it be said that his campaign represents a progressive coalition. Certainly it represents a coalition, but can it be argued that it's a progressive one?
The pattern for church attendance is consistent, with Obama getting 73% of the vote among those attending church more than weekly. His percentage consistently goes down with decreasing church attendance:
As far as I know, this has not been the pattern in other primaries Obama has won. In South Carolina, for example, the church attendance pattern was similar (decreasing Obama support with decreasing attendance), however, he got more support among self-described liberals at least, as well as among Democrats.
With his rejection of health care mandates, "Harry and Louise"-style attacks on same, adoption of "crisis" rhetoric regarding Social Security, talk of power sharing with Republicans and so on, perhaps it's no wonder that at least some Republicans have taken up the call.
