To paraphrase Rush Limbaugh (who, with utter predictability, is now going after the messenger while ignoring the message), the "New York Times" story about McCain’s involvement with a telecom Washington lobbyist is not the story. How the Republican conservative echo chamber spins it is the story.
And what inspired the directory that follows is the claim posited February 20th on CNN’s "Anderson Cooper 360 Degrees" dealing with the breaking news about McCain by Republican conservative operative and Mitt Romney advisor, Bay Buchanan.
BUCHANAN: We expect our candidates to live up to those values, not just to talk about them. [Snip]
This is not the Democratic Party. This is the party of values. And we assume that our candidates have been loyal to their families. We assume that. We don't ask them that question. [Emphasis added]
Enough! I take not one ounce of schadenfreude about the Times story. I fear it might well be exploited to unite the Republicans and to be a stimulus for fundraising more than even a Hillary nomination would.
But at a minimum, I do hope it serves as a "shot across the bow" that the nation is tired of the swiftboating, disingenuous dissembling and deceit that’s been a hallmark of the Republican Party and its minions for far too long. Quit it!
When Ms. Buchanan tried to claim "family values" as the sole domain of conservatives I popped a gasket. The problem with "family values" has always been: Whose family? Whose values?
So let this directory serve as a reminder to Bay (and all Republicans) that we are ALL "values voters" – not just conservatives.
Our country faces serious issues, so I would hope that it will also clear the path to having a civil discourse on those issues between whoever ends up being the Republican and Democratic Party nominees.
(NOTE: Unless there was some other associated issue, I did not include "simple" philandering – the list is long enough as it is. And it goes without saying that I will gladly correct any overt errors anyone can document.)
