I'm attacking Obama in the hope that it will make him stronger. I want Obama to win.
Yes, I recognize the irony of preaching cooperation and going on the attack myself. However, attacks on Obama don't seem to help Hillary. Maybe these words will help Obama supporters craft a message to peel off the "softer" targets among the Clinton supporters.
Obama promises change, but let's look at what won't change in 2009.
Roger Ailes will still run Fox, and Rupert Murdoch will still run News Corp. The people did not elect them.
Bill O'Reily and Sean Hannity and their ilk will still have shows on Fox.
Chris Tucker and Lou Dobbs will still have telivised platforms.
Newt Ginrich and Karl Rove will still be working behind the scenes.
THe Cato institute and the American Enterprise Institute will not shut their doors.
Rush Limbaugh and Neil Boortz will still dominate talk radio.
All those retiring and ousted congressman will move to the private sector as consultants and lobbyists,
Bolton and Gonzalez and Scalia Junior and Powell's son and the rest of the unelected officials will be biding their time for the next Republican administration.
Ann Coulter will still be seeling books.
Pat Roberston and Joyce Meyers and Bob Dobson will still drag the church into the public arena, to make it a Christions versus Liberals debate.
Alito and Robers will still be on the supreme court.
I could go on.
We are all tired of the bitterness and divide that is rampant in DC, but we need to remember that it is not caused by us.
Bill Clinton was the ultimate deal maker. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid don't seem to have the spine for anything but compromise. Yet every time we take a step to the middle, the Republicans take two steps back to the right.
Remember when the Democrats were trying to pass Homeland Security, and GW didn't want anything to do with it? When we finally put enough pressure on him to make him shift positions, he added a poison pill for the unions. The Rebulicans played politcal games rather than acting in the best interest of the country.
Remember it was Newt Gingrich who poll testing the language in order to sell unpopular ideas.
Remember that Monica Lewinski was only found after they trotted out the false Jennifer Flowers show for months.
Think of the Friedman unit.
Think about all those false terrorist warnings that seemed to come just before an election or a contentious bill.
The people responsible may be voted out in November, but they had an army of apologists, water carriers, chicken-littles, distractors, attack dogs and money men to back them up. This is the "vast right wing conspiracy" that Hillary Clinton warned us about years ago, and they are not going anywhere.
We all want the war to be over, but until the Republican's clean house on their own and start electing moderates who will work for the people instead of the party the war will still drag on.
McCain has a reputation as a Maverick and closet liberal, but how many times did he cross the aisle in the last two years? In the past few weeks, how often has he cozied up to the type of people listed above?
Obama supportes seem to want the November election to be our VE Day, so that we can start our own Marshall Plan to rebuild America.
There are those of us who think November will be D-Day instead. We have not yet begun to fight.
I am glad that Obama has an olive branch in his hand. I hope the Republicans take the offer this time. I just pray that his other hand isn't empty.
