I usually don’t blog in the morning because then I have to go to work, and I prefer to stay around to respond to comments. But today I’m having a particularly difficult time waking up because along with the Teletubbies on TV there’s now the idiot in chief spewing lies about telco amnesty and his commitment to protecting our liberties.
His words are directed at Congress and so are mine. Here’s the picture, Oh People of the House. If you cave on this I’m going to personally go on the rampage and you will be taking the brunt of it.
If you let amnesty creep back into the bill, then I will personally locate every challenger in the California Democratic primaries in June who is running against a Democratic incumbent in the House and give to their campaigns. I don’t care who you are or how much you’ve contributed to the cause in the past, I’m going to paint you with my broad brush.
You have been pathetic in standing up to the President in the past year and I’m fed up with it. If you don’t like the prospect of having to work harder to retain your seat in the coming elections, then do yourself a favor and talk with your colleagues. Beg them if you have to, but get them to stand firm against this wicked man and his war on our constitutional rights.
I would be more patient if Democrats in Congress had been responsible in defending our rights. But these are the people who caved in to the President on habeas corpus, supporting his plan to ignore that fundamental right. That’s comparable to the Reichstag granting Hitler permanent status as dictator. So, I have no patience left. Give in on this, folks, and you will be working harder and harder to get the money and votes you need to stay in office. I will personally make sure that there are consequences at the ballot box for this.
As for you, Mr. President, I think you should remember that you are still impeachable. I haven’t given up on that and I don’t plan to. Regardless of what happens in the House, you will never be protected from your wrongdoing. Congress doesn’t have the power to grant anyone amnesty from violating the Constitution. That goes for your friends in the telecom industry and it goes for you, too. The only way to legally stop these lawsuits is to get an amendment passed to the Constitution granting that immunity. Nothing else will hold up in court because the Constitution supersedes any act of Congress and it supersedes anything you do.
Sanity. That’s all I’m asking for, here. Step back from the precipice and give our Constitution the support it needs. And remember: I have a checkbook and I’m not afraid to use it.
