This diary is not about the primaries. This diary is about fear. Irrational, self-defeating, useless fear. Also known as terror.
Our country was attacked in 2001, and has been in the grip of terror from that day forward. Every day since then, our country has been terrorised, and our collective fear has constantly manipulated by cynical politicians. Because of terror, our country and Constitution are being damaged ever single day. Democrats are planning on "compromising" the justice system, and giving amnesty to companies that spied on us illegally. They are substituting their own judgment for democracy and the rule of law.
Please. Let's put aside for one moment all the tension surrounding the Democratic primaries, and focus our energies on freedom:
This week, the ACLU is launching Calling for Freedom, the boldest, most ambitious telephone advocacy program in our history. Working hand-in-hand with other organizations, we’re flooding the House of Representatives with thousands upon thousands of phone calls, urging key members to stand firm against Bush fear-mongering on FISA.
Please call your representative right now.
The House could vote at any time. And there’s no guarantee that they will hold firm on their refusal to pass FISA legislation that defies the Constitution and overlooks telecom companies’ massive invasions of our privacy.
If we hold the line in the House, it will be for one reason: Because you and other ACLU activists across the country generated thousands and thousands of phone calls.
This is an urgent, time-sensitive request. Please call now.
I know many of you have called already. And I know that many of you feel like Congress has already made up its mind. That may What's more, we should not have to lobby our representatives in congress to follow the law. But until the vote happens, we haven't lost, and there is no reason to concede. We owe it to our country and our Constitution to do more than we should have to.
From what I am hearing, many Congressmen haven't heard from many constituents at all about this. Think about that. You could be the person who gets your rep to vote the right way. What's that saying? You could be the change you are waiting for.
Talking points from the ACLU:
- Stand strong against the Senate bill! So far, House leaders have courageously rejected the shameful Senate Intelligence Committee Bill (S. 2248) that authorizes warrantless spying on Americans and lets lawbreaking telecommunications companies off the hook. Please continue fighting for the Constitution, and rejecting Bush’s fear-mongering.
- The House must continue to reject telecom immunity. Lawsuits must be allowed to proceed or we’ll never know the truth about what laws were broken and how many Americans' rights were violated.
- The House must reject any bill that allows the government to spy on Americans without getting a warrant. America doesn’t need a bill that needlessly expands the President’s ability to spy on innocent Americans without a warrant.
