I am a student at UW-Milwaukee. Over the past semester there has been a change in the editorial content of our student newspaper. I realize that being a college paper the editorial section has been very liberal and continues to be that way for the most part. This semester however, there seems to be a weekly editorial from the new resident wingnut.
I'm not looking to suppress anyone's freedom of speech here even though I vehemently disagree with this person on just about everything if not everything. Some of the things he says offend me, but I believe he has gone over the line. The problem is the comment was not in the story editorial itself, but in a comment the author made in response to people on the message board.
I would like to ask the opinion of the community, should I write a letter to the editor and ask that they remove him from the paper?
The comment in question is one he makes in response to another poster, I'll frame it here as well as provide the link to the entire page. You'll find the original editorial there as well as links to the other drivel this guy spouts, if you can handle reading it. Here is the comment,
Even if you take fetal rights out of debate it is not in the rational interests of state to allow the murder of it's future citizens just because some dirty little skanks don't want accept their parental responsibilities.

I find this highly offensive, referring to anyone who's had an abortion as a "dirty little skank". Its enraging and I can't even really find the words to respond to it. The use of that phrase seems to me to be putting the blame squarely on the woman's shoulders. No attempt to address raising a child in poverty with one parent when the father decides he's gotten what he wants and doesn't want to have anything to do with supporting the child. No circumstances are taken into account, they're all just "dirty little skanks" who want to have sex but don't want to deal with the consequences. Its all their fault for giving in to their sinful urges and they should destroy their life as well as probably the life of the child to take responsibility for their actions. I could go on about how wrong the sentiment and this comment are, but I'm sure someone like Dr. Harrison could do it much better than I.
My question for all of you is, should I ask for him to be terminated over this comment. It wasn't in the editorial, but is from the author himself and is posted on the same page at the UWM Post site. He has the right to his right wing talking points and other drivel, but I believe this comment is too much. I've got a poll! What do you think?
P.S. If you want to go ahead and engage this guy on his crazy imperialist views, go for it. I tried it with FISA and he never responded, but he's going at on this editorial.
Sorry if this is a little disjointed, its only my second diary and I'm not an English major and I hate grammar!
