So, it's Sunday night, my wife has gone to bed, and I am up with a glass or red wine doing the dishes before bed. I flip the radio to CSPAN, and it's Michelle Obama giving her stump speech from some Philly suburb. It is essentially identical to the one I heard a month ago from South Carolina. And I am moved, just like before. Her words carry truth and spirit.
Then, CSPAN switches the show, and we get Bill Clinton, giving a speech for Hillary in Scranton, PA. And it is brilliant. Bill can still speak those sweet words. It is intelligent, charming, folksy, and gently cantankerous in an wise-old-man kind of way. I love the policies proposed. Makes sense. Reasonable ideas. He defends himself beautifully against the NAFTA criticisms (I personally still support NAFTA). And I am left feeling, again, why can't BOTH Obama and Hillary be president? I am saddened that somehow, by some mechanism I still can't fathom, Bush got to be president. Twice. The difference between who is now in power and who will probably replace him is so stark, so obvious. I am saddened and excited for my country at the same time.
Then, CSPAN changes their programing again. This time, it is a replay of the Sunday talk shows. The "Meet the Press" music cues up, and the big voiced announcer aks us, with big "Nightline" horns going off in the background, whether the controversy between Obama and Clinton will destroy the Democratic party. Sensational! Scandal! Tough questions!
Here, among the "journalists", are the enablers of our current mess.
Meanwhile, John McBush is sitting over in Iraq telling us that the "Sadir surge" is working. But he can't even return to the Baghdad market he visited last spring, wearing armor under armed guard. This is not just theater, it is bad theater. I am sending Obama money, AND taking the clothespin off my nose if Hillary gets the nomination. The current situation must be culled.
