Snow and Donuts, or What I Saw and Ate on my Winter Vacation.
I’m not going to bore you with too much context. Suffice to say, I went north where the baked goods are better and the weather is cold enough to snow. Philadelphia, NJ/NY, and Montreal. Here are some pictures, as I actually don’t really have any funny anecdotes to relate from the adventure. (I know! Odd!)
If you don’t like looking at other peoples’ pictures, this diary is not for you!
First, the Donuts. Our accomodations in Philly were right above a Dunkin’ Donuts. Ahh, heaven. I consumed many a Neo-Conservative donut while I was there. (Did you know they are owned by The Carlyle Group, aka corporate war profiteers? If you didn’t, you will be informed of it repeatedly in the comments.) Yes, I know, my donuts are funding evil. That’s why they taste soooo gooood.
But I didn’t just eat NeoCon donuts; I had some independent donuts in NYC with srkp23 as we railed against unfair labor practices, and then in Canada I had some Tim Horton’s. (A little dry, but good crispy texture and interesting flavors of Munchkins, aka Donut Holes.) Here’s evidence of the Evil Donuts, Philadelphia’s City Hall (and Blue Sky!), me doing the Rocky thing at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (far right), the Donut Pub donuts, and the Tim Horton donuts.

So thanks to the digital camera I’ve gotten into taking pictures, and like many fledgling photographers I’ve become enamored of the Macro function—that icon that looks like a little flower? Lets you take detailed, up-close pictures. And worst of all, I’ve become entranced by photographing food. So, here’s some other stuff I ate on my vacation, other than donuts (lest you think I am only eating donuts): asparagus, four-years-aged cheese (mmm...), some flaky pastry and a café au lait, and an impressive feast prepared for Saturday night dinner. I am not sure if you can see it on your monitors or at this size, but these pictures are incredibly, incredibly detailed. Which is the point. Otherwise, they’d just be kind of lame.
Saturday after dinner my best friend and I and some of her friends went to hear a Serbian rock band play folk music of the gypsies. We sort of did traditional dances and tried not to step on too many people. Thankfully there are no pictures of that.
Some people might go south for spring break but since I live in the south, I went north. While in Montreal my best friend and I partook of a variety of winter sports, such as ice skating, night skiing, and trudging around in the slush. Montreal is beautiful, and I suggest you all go. Here are some pictures. Several feet of snow fell the weekend before I arrived, so everything was very scenic. A typical Montreal street, some rad graffiti, reflections in the glass, self-reflection, best friend and her boyfriend on ice, and the view from night skiing. Those blurs were some skiiers who shot by during my long exposure.
There you have it. Back in Texas, where it’s t-shirts and flip-flops weather already. On to the comments!
From bronte 17:
JulieUnplugged (a nOOb) offered this profound comment in teacherken's thoughtful diary Promise -- And Its Limits.
From GreyHawk:
In the diary by noweasels titled You Are Not Alone, in response to a comment that I made and subsequently turned into a diary, sherlyle notes the importance of one person and the capacity of a single individual to change the world -- even if just for one other person -- through the capacity for selfless love and the ability to act as a window for one another's view of and upon the world.
From the diary I'd written out of the comment I mentioned above, I nominate this comment by DWG. It's something I wish more people could understand -- I believe that statement goes to the true heart of our humanity.
From George Hier:
I loved this comment by housesella, it is perhaps the single best analogy I've seen for the Clinton campaign.
From OrangeClouds115:
This comment by ImpeachKingBushII was way funny and sick.
