Greetings DailyKos. This is my first ever diary, so go easy.
So anyway, I was watching the Bill Maher clip from Crooks and Liars that's posted on the front page today, and my fiancee's friend Adam was using the computer at her desk next to mine (I know, cute aren't we). Shortly after the clip started up Adam had the weirdest reaction I'd ever seen, though perhaps not the weirdest I've ever heard of. Follow me after the jump for the rest.
Right after the Bill Maher clip starts up, Adam says "Oh no, I hate that guy!", like you'd expect a Kossack would react to an O'Reilly clip. I've always thought Adam was a smart guy, though he's more of a creative (Film Major) type than an intellectual, so I'm only mildly perplexed at this point. While I like Bill Maher most of the time, he does sometimes annoy me too. So I watch about three-fourths of the clip and then my player pauses to cache the rest (I was downloading a patch for a game at the same time). Silly person that I am, I figure this is a convenient time to turn to Adam, who's perusing MySpace, and ask him why it is he doesn't like Bill Maher.
Adam says, "I hate all political commentators, but I especially hate Bill Maher because he thinks he can do it while being funny." Whoah. OK, I can wrap my mind around people not following politics, but the vehemence of his reaction caught me off-guard. So, being a silly person again, I ask him why he hates political commentators. Says Adam, "They're all full of shit and none of it makes any difference anyway." Whoah. You guys can imagine how I, like any of you I guess, was just floored by this notion. None of it matters?!
So, perhaps not knowing when to leave well-enough alone, I try to lay it out to him why it matters. How I'm sure McCain isn't liking guys with cable shows making fun of him and telling people he's essentially too senile to be President. But Adam is still vehement that it doesn't make any difference and starts to accuse me of haranguing him and not respecting his opinion. At this point I finally figure its time to quit before I anger my friend unnecessarily.
Is that strange? Or have I just run into a typical response from the politically uninvolved? Like I said, I can understand someone not following politics, even thinking politics is pointless (I don't agree quite obviously, but I understand). But the way he seemed insulted at the suggestion that it does matter and he should care, that I can't wrap my mind around.
Thoughts?
