Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama emerged Monday from his St. Thomas beach hideout at the posh Ritz-Carlton -- caught in the non-act by CNN

and played golf at Mahogany Run. Several people got to shake his hand and pose for pictures. The best was the near-full front page photo of the tabloid-size Virgin Islands Daily News – only available free on the Web site's home page as a thumbnail. But, check out the story here:

Popular radio personality, Sam Topp, an avid golfer, was out on the links Monday morning (Easter Monday is a local holiday here) and got a chance to meet Barack. His daily, morning-long radio program is immensely popular, so Barack was the talk of the island today.

Hat tip to The Daily News for its front-page headline: Barack on the Rock.
This 32-square-mile island is nicknamed the Rock, and the frequent lament when life's frustrations double up, is "I've got to get off the Rock." This hilly, even mountainous – St. Peter Mountain – island is dotted with volcanic rock. It sometimes feels so small, and like a family, that if you come to the island, you are under our roof.
I wore my Obama '08 T-shirt today at the mall and it received, perhaps, it's greatest number of reactions, of course all favorable, in this deep blue territory. The population. which is 85 percent "African American," according to the U.S. Census, is more aptly described as West Indian.
Everyone's downright proud of Barack, and I know that he, like anyone who visits our tiny speck of an island, will return home filled with the rampant love and good wishes available here. May the spell of America's Paradise bring good luck, good fortune and much success to our next U.S. President.
Expect to see him re-energized.
