This diary is directed toward all of you "worry warts" out there who think the continued race between Obama and Clinton will doom the Democrats in the Fall election.
Don’t worry; be happy! It will not play out that way.
OK, the press is giving McCain a pass right now. So (to plagiarize Cheney).... No one is paying attention. The column inches and face time are on the Democrats and their horse race. The upper cuts, left hooks, body blows, etc. and they are still standing! That is what people are watching.
Let the press shower McCain with warm and fuzzies for now. Get that crap out of their systems now so later they can claim, "We said nice things about McCain back in the Spring but here is the other side of McCain."
Keep your powder dry
November is a long time off. McCain has a long history that will be easy to attack. Like the five planes he lost, his campaign is destined to go down in flames.
First there is the personally factor. McCain is not warm and fuzzy. He is an angry old man who will most likely lose his temper a couple of times in October. He has many enemies including people who served with him in the navy and fellow POWs. Not to mention a long list of Republicans who would love to stick a knife in this guys back.
Second are the issues. McCain has no winning issues.
The 100 Year War? This will not fly. Most Americans oppose it and want out. There aren’t enough flowers in Iraq to turn the public around on this one.
It’s the economy, stupid! McCain has already admitted he is stupid when it comes to the economy. In fact, McCain has been involved in our biggest economic scandals from the Keating Five to our current sub prime financial crisis. While the Feds might pump enough money into the markets to keep the DOW from total collapse (and good for my retirement) but we all know Bush and the Republicans are not going to do anything to help the middle and working classes. Having forgone a summer vacations, even higher gas prices, and a home loan higher than the value of their homes, these folks could be a bit cranky come November.
The religious right? First, their power has been overrated and waning. Plus, these folks are not big McCain fans. Some might be scared by Reverend Wright but those folks were never going to vote for Obama had he been donating to the KKK for the past 20 years rather than a member of Wright’s church. And when the comparisons start in earnest, McCain has aligned himself with religious fanatics.
But don’t sit back!
Keep working to get Obama the nomination than get him elected. But, don’t pay too much attention to the Chicken Littles claiming the Democrats are doomed in 2008.
But I could be wrong.
