Today I overheard a conversation among some young girls. One of them said she wasn't really happy with Hillary Clinton, but would vote for her over John McCain because she's pro-choice.
The other girl corrected her, assuring her that "McCain is totally pro-choice." When the first girl found that surprising, she was assured, "I'm absolutely sure about that. All the candidates are the same on abortion."
Of course this is an April Fool's, since McCain is about as anti-abortion as they come.
He still wants, and has always wanted, for Roe v. Wade to be overturned.
Of course, McCain has flip-flopped on abortion before, switching back and forth between "I would not support repeal" to "as president, I would work toward its repeal" in the course of a day.
There are a number of Republicans who want to confuse the issue, such as Republicans for Choice, who says "And John McCain's election will be a strong message to our enemies...you don't mess with John McCain, he can and will go the distance!"
In Florida, McCain won 45% of pro-choice Republicans, more than Rudy Giuliani.
According to NARAL, "A poll taken by Fox News showed 52 percent of voters were unaware of McCain’s position on choice." (Can't find the actual poll.)
Fortunately, Planned Parenthood is running ads telling voters that McCain is actually anti-abortion and always has been.
Please make sure everyone you know, especially low-information voters or those with some affection for McCain, is aware of this fact: John McCain is very much against abortion!
