Warning! Extreme rampant speculation ahead! Proceed with caution!
So some democrats are all abuzz with the idea of an Obama/Gore ticket. Common sense dictates that Gore wouldn't want to be vice president again. After all, that's sort of a "step down" after winning the presidency in 2000 ;)
But a lot of democrats are thinking that this is the perfect way to unite the party in the aftermath of Hillary's kamikaze run. Here's the reasoning:
- Al Gore is a rock star and has elevated his status in the past 8 years to a respected world figure. A Statesman, of sorts.
- Gore would bring instant credibility to the ticket and would help Obama get a lot of those Hillary voters by alleviating that "experience" concern a lot of them have.
- Al Gore doesn't need to be introduced to the American people whereas a Joe Biden, say, would.
- Gore represents that "link" to the Clinton administration sans baggage. Obama would benefit from someone who was there during a time that many Americans think was great as compared to what they have now, but Gore isn't tainted by the scandals of the Clinton's.
- Gore could easily say "I don't want to be Dick Cheney. I just want this platform to promote Green initiatives around the world in a more official capacity.
- Obama could make the effective argument of "This guy is ready to step up in the event that something happens to me" and most people would agree.
- Democrats are waiting for Al Gore to swoop in and "save the day". What better way than to accept a VP slot with Obama, help him win the election, negotiate with world leaders about Global Warming, and bask in the glow as "the guy who won the presidency for the democrats....AGAIN" :D
- The Clinton's would effectively be ousted from the party. Maybe Hillary goes on to be Senate leader or some shit, but their role in major politics would effectively be over.
- The excitement generated by an Obama/Gore ticket would be too much for the country and media to ignore and they would swamp John McCain.
- There would be no fractured convention in Denver and the entire democratic party becomes united.
Far fetched? Maybe, but this is why it's so fun to speculate!
The major problem with this scenario is whether or not Al Gore's star outshines Obama's. Would people think that Al Gore was really the president and not Obama?
Still, before you can deal with that narrative, you have to win the election. And what better way than with a super star ticket that materializes out of the blue and is acceptable to almost every democrat and independent in the country?
what do you think? Would Al Gore be a good Veep for Obama? What effect do you think that would have on the election this fall?
