If Obama is so easily beatable, as some Republican strategists enjoy saying right now, why is Obama out-fundraising McCain by so much? Republicans are talking about supporting him, but they aren't actually supporting him where it counts, in fund-raising. Which to me is the only polling that matters in this capitalist state I live in.
In the most recent fundraising cycle, the one in which McCain became the nominee of his party before the convention, and saw the surge in support for him created largely by the allegation in the Times that he'd had an untoward relationship with a lobbyist, he raised just 7.9 million, compared to 20 million and change for Hillary, and over 40 million for Barack Obama. Fox News reports that just one quarter of the big Bush backers have joined in so far, and yet this was the season that saw the "McCain Surge" and the Reverend Wright scandal for Obama---which means that during the toughest season yet for Obama, he raised five times the money McCain raised during the time his party apparently gathered around him.
Polls are notoriously unreliable, but money is a little less so. It's possible McCain could come from behind on fundraising, but right now, for the Republicans, he's the electoral version of taking your mom to the Prom--Republicans are not splurging for the limo on this one. I'm concerned, for sure, but I'm also very interested in how this election continues to surprise with a completely different kind of political narrative.
Also, yes, this is my second diary ever.
