Check out this latest Obama ad for Pennsylvania.
In my opinion, it's the first ad that really has the potential to be effective with Pennsylvaia voters. Very effective use of family members to both introduce and humanize Obama. Particularly liked the shot of him talking to the older woman and the words of his grandmother. These are likely to resonate with people who have, so far, been unmoved. His sister will influence more sophisticated voters. The images of Barack with his wife and daughters are priceless.
Honestly, I don't think Obama needs anything more than this kind of message. As the media begins to report the fact that Clinton has already lost, voters need to see Obama's humanity so that they feel comfortable enough to move in his direction.
I've spent enough time in places with demographics similar to Pennsylvania's to know that older, white voters are not out of reach. They carry certain irrational fears, but they are not monsters. They would like to have their fears addressed. They would like to be won over. More than anything, it's essential that Obama seem warm rather than arrogant. Bill Clinton was masterful in that regard in the '92 race. Keep bowling. No wonder Obama keeps joking about it. The campaign has a solid understanding of what they're up against and what they need to accomplish.
