... and YOU Obama supporters are to blame.
Elitism refers to "situations in which an elite individual assumes special privileges and responsibilities in the hope that this arrangement will benefit humanity."
An elite individual is someone who is "capable of participating effectively at the very highest levels of his or her chosen discipline.
Thus, an elite person could be someone who has assumed the special privilege of representing American people at the highest level in the discipline of politics, which embraces all the responsibility belonging to the Office of the President of the United States, in the hope that this arrangement will benefit humanity.
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary's defines "elite" as:
a. singular or plural in construction: the choice part : cream <the elite of the entertainment world>
b. singular or plural in construction: the best of a class <superachievers who dominate the computer elite — Marilyn Chase>
According to Wikipedia, elite attributes include:
Rigorous study of, or great accomplishment within, a particular field of study (e.g., campaign management)
"[Former Clinton Chief Strategist Mark] Penn’s demotion — he will continue to do some polling — is the latest upheaval in a campaign that has seen the turnover of its manager, faced critical money shortages and has often lagged behind Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in cohesive message and ground strategy." - Sydney Morning Herald
A long track record of competence in a demanding field (e.g., political representation)
"I believe Republicans did feel they could work with him on certain pieces of legislation," said Mike Lawrence, executive director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Center at Southern Illinois University. "Even people who disagreed with Obama felt he would listen. He would disagree without getting in people's faces." - St. Petersburg Times
An extensive history of dedication and effort in service to a specific discipline (e.g., community organization)
"That's the magic of what they've done," says Simon Rosenberg, president of the Democratic think tank NDN. "They've married the incredibly powerful online community they built with real on-the-ground field operations. We've never seen anything like this before in American political history." - Rolling Stone
A high degree of accomplishment, training or wisdom within a given field (e.g., political candidacy)
"[Obama] leads in the one metric that matters most: the pledged delegates chosen directly by Democratic voters. But he also leads in the popular vote, the number of states won and money raised." - MetroWest Daily News
So when people say, "Obama is an elitist," supporters can only blame themselves for much of that depiction. You granted him much of his success by making him the Democratic frontrunner. You have shattered all fundraising paradigms with your record-breaking small, online donations. You have turned out in record numbers to primaries and caucuses throughout the country. So you see, much of this is your own fault.
