Steve Young, the Democratic contender in the middle of conservative South Orange County, Calif., has sent a letter out to his supporters to fund a poll on his chances versus staunch Bush supporter John Campbell. It seems the pollster believes that Steve may be matching up better than expected, a la Loretta Sanchez versus Bob Dornan, and wants to see if there's an upset in the making.
See Steve's letter below. I've met Steve on several occasions and he's a stand-up pragmatic progressive. It would be HUGE to oust a Republican from this highly conservative district, which includes Newport Beach. Please take a look and see if you can help Steve out. Thanks.

Steve Young's letter:
Dear Friend,
A decade ago, Fred Smoller of Chapman College suspected that major changes were taking place in the Loretta Sanchez/Bob Dornan race. Fred conducted a poll and answered two very important questions: (1) could Loretta win, and (2) what issues worked to Loretta's advantage. Fred’s poll, showing that Loretta could win made the front page of the OC Register and two months later, Loretta won.
Recently, Mr. Smoller telephoned me to tell me he suspected major changes were taking place in the Steve Young/John Campbell race. For example, during the first quarter of 2008, John Campbell raised only $1200 more than I did. This is unheard of for a Democrat to keep pace with the Republican in this District.
Mr. Smoller wants to conduct a poll to answer two very important questions: (1) can Steve Young win, and (2) what issues work to my advantage. Fred believes so strongly in what the poll will show that he offered to conduct the poll for me at cost.
Fred estimated the poll will cost approximately $18,000. One couple has volunteered to contribute $4,600 ($2,300 each) for the poll provided I raise the remaining $13,000 by May 15. There is wisdom in their challenge. They said, "Because time is of the essence for the poll, it’s the same for raising the money." I accepted their challenge. Can I count on you to help me? Not everyone can make a $4,600 contribution, but any amount you contribute, when combined with our other supporters will help us meet the challenge. Will you help me?

The Smoller poll results in the 48th District will ripple both in Orange County and in Washington D.C. As it stands now, the politicos in D.C. don’t pay much attention to the 48th. I don’t blame them. If I lived across the country, I would depend on conventional wisdom. But this is not a conventional year, and I am not a conventional candidate. I know Mr. Smoller’s poll will turn heads and change the dynamic in the 48th, just as it did for Loretta a decade ago!
With your help, we can change the course of this election for our district. And that can make all the difference in the world! I know I can count on you. Don’t let this chance slip away.
