Tonight, before you go to bed, go to the pantry. Look through your canned and dry food (rice, pasta, etc.) and pack some tasty items into a paper bag.
Tomorrow, when you wake up, put the bag on the front porch. You'll be glad you did.
Tomorrow is the 2008 National Letter Carriers Association Food Drive. Your hard-working postal carriers will be retrieving food donations and delivering them to food banks, community pantries and other non-profits that feed the needy.
More info can be found at the NALC.org Food Drive web site (along with a cool video promoting the drive by the Harlem Globetrotters).
Make sure all items are non-perishable. Also, don't dump the stuff you've had in the cupboard for years. The six-year-old olives you've been saving for the martini tasting you've always been meaning to throw aren't going to do Second Harvest clients any good. Ditto for the fruitcake that's been passed around your family for Christmas after Christmas. If you wouldn't eat it, why would you serve it?
Please take a few minutes to see if you have some items you can donate today. Food banks and pantries are seriously streched right now, trying to serve more and more clients as disposable--and donatable--incomes decline. Take advantage of your postal pals' offer to take over the driving. Being a good neighbor doesn't get any easier than this.
