Congressman Tim Mahoney, Florida who is unopposed in HIS Democratic nomination, has affiliated himself with one of 5 Democrats running in a primary for County Commissioner. The district that these 5 are vying for is almost 90% minority and heavily Democratic.
Update, the candidate he was supporting with a fundraiser has sent out a "correction" letter stating that it is NOT really a fundraiser at all, but a "get together" and that the original mailing from Congressman Mahoney inviting folks to a joint fundraiser was an "error"
.
The rule is that the winning candidate has to reside in the District they are running for BY the date of the general election. Only 2 of the 5 running currently live in the district they are campaigning to represent and only those 2 are minorities.
The candidate Congressman Mahoney is supporting through fundraisers is not one of them.
Aside from the unfairness of an unopposed ( in the primaries)Congressman taking sides in a County-wide Democratic primary, it is counter productive for HIS campaign to alienate a large block of Democratic voters.
He will be facing a well financed Republican campaign trying to take back the seat that Mark Foley handed to him and for him to help a non minority candidate win a local campaign for what has been a minority seat is probably a pretty dumb move.
