As newly annointed Precinct 13 captains in Sioux Falls, S.D., my husband and I decided today was prime time to get out the vote. The sun was shining, the wind was blowing (really hard), and Obama signs are popping up like tulips along the streets. It was a good day!
We spent five hours hitting the streets today. It was easier than last time. Partly because we'd done it before (last time was our first.) Also because we were just visiting Democrats this time (our primary is closed.)
One thing we really noticed: Obama supporters are fired up and friendly. We were thrilled every time we got to knock on the door of a fellow Barack fan. There was lots of talk about last night's rally in Sioux Falls (which drew 7,000.)
We also were making sure that people knew that they have to be registered as Democrats by Monday if they want to vote in our last-in-the-nation primary on June 3. I didn't come across anyone who wasn't registered, however. I think it would be a bit hard for this election to slip by unnoticed.
I was really disappointed by Hillary supporters today, and my husband is worried about whether or not they will support Obama in a general election. They were really nasty. Maybe the Obama supporters we met would also be nasty if they were losing. I don't know. But personally, I'm happy to see people involved, even if they're not supporting my guy. I don't understand why Hillary's supporters can't feel the same way, or at least not be so hostile. It doesn't reflect very well on their candidate.
We'll probably be out next weekend, too. And calls in between. And did I mention we're in the middle of moving? Sleep will wait!
