Okay, I admit it - I've been fascinated with astrology since I was 10 years old. Please - let's not get into the “merits or lack thereof” discussion regarding metaphysics. Believe me, I’ve already contemplated this endlessly and can see both sides (I am an Aquarian, after all (that's an astro in joke for you). I find diving into the complexities of the astrological symbol system very soothing to my sometimes fevered brain and whether or not astrology is "real" -I'll leave that to your personal viewpoint.
Sun signs are what most people are familiar with since (mostly) everyone knows what day they were born. Sun signs can give you a very general overview of certain traits you might have (how's that for a non-committal statement). In other words, in astrological terms it is impossible to dig deeply into the complexities of a person's character if you only know their sun sign. You end up with a trend rather than a person. It's kind of like the demographics we keep hearing about in this race. Such as - white women over 40 are more likely to support Clinton than Obama. Okay- that tells you something in general but it doesn't take into account more specific data explaining all the over 40 white women (like myself) that are firm Obama supporters. If you know specifically where a certain middle-aged white woman grew up, where she lives now, her educational background, her ethnic background, the work she does, her political leanings, her marital status, her religious affiliation etc. etc. you'll have a much better idea if she'll go for Clinton or Obama. Same with astrology. A person's chart is interpreted from all sorts of data such as time of birth, place of birth, date of birth, planetary placements, signs, houses, relationship of planets to each other - and that's just the basics.
I haven't put much effort into interpreting the complete charts of Obama or Clinton because both of them have birth times that are unconfirmed rendering their chart data highly inaccurate in astrological terms. As for McCain, his birth time data is supposedly pretty accurate but honestly, I don’t feel like thinking about him right now
Anyway - having said all that, it's kind of fun to read the sun sign descriptions of both Obama (Leo) and Clinton (Scorpio). This site (no it isn't mine!) lays it out well in my opinion. By the way, in astro parlance, Leo and Scorpio are two signs that tend to have a lot of friction between them. This can either create a lot of negative tension or if the two individuals rise to the challenge it can bring about positive outcomes.
Barack:
The Leo type is the most dominant, spontaneously creative and extrovert of all the zodiacal characters. In grandeur of manner, splendor of bearing and magnanimity of personality, they are the monarch's among humans as the lion is king of beasts. They are ambitious, courageous, dominant, strong willed, positive, independent, self-confident there is no such a word as doubt in their vocabularies, and they are self-controlled. Born leaders, either in support of, or in revolt against, the status quo. They are at their most effective when in a position of command, their personal magnetism and innate courtesy of mind bringing out the best of loyalty from subordinates. They are uncomplicated, knowing exactly what they want and using all their energies, creativeness and resolution to get it, as well as being certain that they will get whatever they are after. Their followers know where they are with Leonians. Leonians think and act bigger than others would normally dare; the ambitiousness of their schemes and idealism sometimes daunt their followers, their practical hardheadedness and ability to go straight to the heart of any problem reassures those who depend on them. If Leonians meet with setbacks they thrive on the adversity.
On the whole they are powers for good, for they are strongly idealistic, humane, and beneficent. They have powerful intelligence and are of a broad philosophical, sometimes religious, turn of mind. Those who are devout may become very obstinate in upholding traditional beliefs and will cling tenaciously, but with complete sincerity, to practices and doctrines which liberal thinkers regard as absurdly out-of-date. These will be found as the 'lions' of industries, and in the forefront of the cutting edge of technologies.
Scorpio: Hillary
Scorpios are the most intense, profound, powerful characters in the zodiac. Even when they appear self-controlled and calm there is a seething intensity of emotional energy under the placid exterior. They are like the volcano not far under the surface of a calm sea, it may burst into eruption at any moment. But those of us who are particularly perceptive will be aware of the harnessed aggression, the immense forcefulness, magnetic intensity, and often strangely hypnotic personality under the tranquil, but watchful composure of Scorpio. In conventional social gatherings they are pleasant to be with, thoughtful in conversation, dignified, and reserved, yet affable and courteous; they sometimes possess penetrating eyes which make their shyer companions feel naked and defenseless before them.
In their everyday behavior they give the appearance of being withdrawn from the center of activity, yet those who know them will recognize the watchfulness that is part of their character. They need great self-discipline, because they are able to recognize the qualities in themselves that make them different from other humans, and to know their utterly conventional natures can be used for great good, or great evil. Their tenacity and willpower are immense, their depth of character and passionate conviction overwhelming, yet they are deeply sensitive and easily moved by their emotions. Their sensitivity, together with a propensity for extreme likes and dislikes make them easily hurt, quick to detect insult or injury to themselves (often when none is intended) and easily aroused to ferocious anger. This may express itself in such destructive speech or action that they make lifelong enemies by their outspokenness, for they find it difficult not to be overly critical of anything or anyone to whom they take a dislike.
They can harness their abundant energy constructively, tempering their self-confidence with shrewdness and their ambition with magnanimity toward others provided they like them. They relate to fellow workers only as leaders and can be blunt to those they dislike to the point of cruelty. In fact they are not above expressing vindictiveness in deliberate cruelty. They are too demanding, too unforgiving of faults in others, perhaps because they are not aware of the shortcomings within themselves, and extravagantly express their self-disgust in unreasonable resentment against their fellows.
Now please – all you Leos and Scorpios out there – if these descriptions sound nothing like you remember – you probably have a lot of other chart factors that mitigate your sun sign characteristics.
So, now I'm just curious - I'd like to get a sense of the different sun sign "types" that frequent our beloved dKos. So if you'd take my highly unscientific poll ( yes, you Virgos, I know this self-selected sample won't really give me an accurate picture) I'd really appreciate it. I even gave you skeptics an answer to select!
Update: I want to clarify that the description of Barack and Hillary are from This site. I thought they were really apt.
