At least, she did NOT apologize to the right people, or even for the right thing. She completely missed the point. But some in the media are already reporting her response as an "apology". Here's a few samples:
Huffington Post:
"Sen. Clinton has issued the following apology for her statements, a quick departure from her campaign's initial response:"
Faux News Headline:
"Clinton Apologizes After Invoking RFK Assassination"
CNN, I believe, used to have the term "apology" in their story, but I think they've since updated it to simply say that she's "explained" her remarks, which she has not really. Here's her "explanation" (from CNN):
"...Earlier today, I was discussing the Democratic primary history and in the course of that discussion mentioned the campaigns that both my husband and Sen. Kennedy waged in California in June in 1992 and 1968, and I was referencing those to make the point that we have had nominating primary contests that go into June. That's an historic fact.
"The Kennedys have been much on my mind in the last days because of Sen. [Edward] Kennedy, and I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and particularly for the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever,"
So, first note that there's no "I'm sorry" or "I apologize" in there. It's simply the non-apology type of apology essentially saying "I regret people took what I said the wrong way" and not "I'm sorry for what I said, it was not what I meant."
In any case, so she was trying to say that RFK was campaigning into June. Well, that's a semi-explanation... but why would she phrase her original comments as she did then, like this?
"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it,"
Aside from the lie that Bill didn't wrap up the nomination until June (he effectively wrapped it up in April), what point was there in bringing up the fact that RFK was assassinated in June? She meant exactly what she said... there's no reason for her to get out yet because Obama could be assassinated or whatever (hey, Kennedy has been on her mind, maybe Obama will get cancer), just like RFK, and he still could before he "wraps up" the nomination.
She needs to actually APOLOGIZE to Obama and to all Americans for making the implication that she's only staying in the race because something might happen to the likely nominee. She needs to directly refute this and say, whether she meant it or not, that this is not why she's still in the race. Her "explanation" is not an apology, and only makes things worse.
