I understand why Hillary's behavior, which seems completely irrational, can be upsetting and unsettling. However, while she might look nuts, she's actually playing an angle. Not necessarily a smart one, but an angle nonetheless. Perhaps she feels she's got a reputation as a warrior to uphold. But she's not insane and she's not stupid, and this thing is not going to the Convention.
Here's why Hillary is going to concede. If she doesn't, her own delegates are going to make her completely and utterly irrelevant by abandoning her in droves.
Once that happens, continuing on would make her look stupid. Worse than stupid: foolish, idiotic. No one would pay her any attention and then, at the Convention, a quick vote would finish her off. Forever! She would face a primary challenge when her Senate seat comes up for renewal in 2012. But she would not have to worry about re-election in New York because she wouldn't have the clout to run for dog catcher. Think Dukakis, circa 1989.
Already $20,000,000 in debt, her resources have all but dried up. Once Obama reaches the magic number (whatever number that is after Saturday), all but Clinton's most insane supporters, the hillaryis44 crowd, will abandoned her. Narcissistic and self centered though Hillary may be, she's not stupid.
Politicians will say -- and shout and scream -- they're in it 'till the Convention right up until the moment they drop out. Their surrogates might say it too. Doesn't make it so.
I strongly recommend that everyone who's worrying about this read Al Giordano's excellent blog, The Field. Particularly this post.
By mid-June, this race will be over and the only place Hillary's going is back to New York. Take that to the bank!
