...and we have work to do.
I have no idea if Hillary will take the fight to Denver--hopefully the coming week will result in a mass superdelegate endorsement of Obama to render such an action irrelevant.
If Hillary wants to "suspend" her campaign and keep her options open (in hope of a scandal or implosion in the Obama camp) that's just fine. Absent such a game-changing event a floor fight would only serve to aid and comfort the Enemy.
Possibily she is attempting gain leverage to force her way into the VP slot. Perhaps she has concluded that Obama can.not.win (recall the phone call with Richardson?) and she is Preparing The Way for 2012.
In any case the heavy lifting involved in running the thugs out of the White House starts afresh. If you are exhausted from the long primary season, then take a deep breath. If you are fatigued from answering silly-ass questions about Obama (Isn't he really a Muslim?, etc) then suck it up: The REAL campaign starts right now. We can all help--
1. Donate. Yeah, we've all read about how much money the Obama campaign has raised. It will take all of that and more. Even 25 bucks--multiplied by millions--makes a difference. That money will be critical when we have to push back the lies the Smear Machine wil generate.
2. Volunteer. All the cash in the world will do us no good if we can't get our message to the voters one-on-one. The ground game wins elections, and it is people-powered.
3. Go Local. I think everybody here has tasted the 50-state strategy Kool-Aid: We compete everywhere. If you live in a Hopeless Red State(like me)--all the more reason. Donate to and volunteer in your local race. "More and better Democrats".
4. Reach out. Millions of voters voted for someone not named Obama in the primaries--we need them in November. I know some of Hillary's most ardent supporters have pretty harsh opinions about Obama. We will not get all of them, but I think we can present a clear vision of just what the stakes are in the coming election. The first step is to tone down the rhetoric. Obama has won (or will have by Wednesday morning). Throwing rocks at Hillary loyalists is a waste of ammunition.
5. Be of good cheer. Much of the success of the Obama campaign has been rooted in the boundless optimism of everyone involved. Be positive: It will be the best way to deflect the gibberish sure to spout from the Right.
cheers...
