On Monday I posted a diary predicting that Hillary will concede the race. In fact, I went so far as to assert it was a prediction one could bank on. I want to take a moment to acknowledge that I got it wrong.
I still think Hillary will most likely bow out in the next day or two. Nothing else makes sense. Each day she doesn't concede, her supporters begin to wobble and telegraph warning shots across the bow. She's really overplaying her hand now, acting as though the alleged 18,000,000 (which is inflated by at least half a Mil) of her minions are pawns for continued use in her mad grab for power. However, now I must acknowledge that, dealing with Hillary Clinton, rational assessments don't necessarily matter. What reason did she have to stay in the race after Wisconsin? Certainly, once North Carolina and Indiana rolled past, it was time to drop out. Whatever the reason(s), no one can doubt it's all about Hillary.
In truth, she's got little if any real leverage. Her actions are now destroying her reputation within the party, unmasking herself as the self-centered, narcissistic sociopath many of us had long suspected. She was crystal clear last night that she was refusing to concede in order to leverage concessions, a tact that is completely unprecedented (as far as I know) in modern politics. Although she continues to have influence over some of her followers, many are already peeling away and others are so far gone there may be nothing she can do at this point to corral them for Obama. How many she can actually deliver at this point is anyone's guess. But in a close race, she might flip a state or two as did Nader in 2000.
I was heartened by Hillary's words before AIPAC this morning, in which she made clear her support of the Democratic nominee. She merely failed, once again, to concede that said nominee is not her. I'd be shocked if she didn't come around to such an admission in the next day or two. Still, I imagine I wasn't the only one saddened (even outraged) by her usurpation of Obama's historic moment.
Late Update: It has come to my attention, via the comments below, that Hillary is finally dropping out. Yay!
