This morning, I woke up to a heartening headline here in Lawrence, Kan. Barack Obama has closed to within 10 points of McSame here in the Sunflower State, a bastion of conservatism that hasn't voted Democrat since LBJ. What's the Matter With Kansas? Apparently, not so much. Our conservatard Senator Pat Roberts (who had oversight over U.S. intelligence in the lead up to 9/11) may be on the endangered list as well. More...
Topeka — In the span of one month, presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain’s lead in Kansas over Democrat Barack Obama has been cut in half, and Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts’ margin over Democrat Jim Slattery also has dropped.
This is great news from the land of basketball and tornadoes. Last week, I drove across Kansas with my Obama 08 bumper sticker on my pickup truck. I thought someone would peel the thing off out in western Kansas, especially in the parking lot of the "Beef Empire Days" rodeo I attended in Garden City. Instead, I was assured by a friend that "there is much Obama-love in Western Kansas." Perhaps it's because of his roots in El Dorado?
In the presidential race in Kansas, McCain led Obama in May, 55 percent to 34 percent, a 21-point edge.
But that fell to 47 percent to 37 percent in June, according to a telephone survey of 500 likely voters taken June 11. The survey, taken after Obama essentially clinched the Democratic nomination, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Rasmussen Reports has moved Kansas from "safely Republican" to "likely Republican" in the White House contest.
My wife and I were planning on volunteering for Barack, but we figured we'd be canvassing in neighboring Missouri, since he had no shot in our home state.
Woah! I guess we should do our campaigning right here in Kansas. If our state can turn blue, it's Barack in a landslide.
