Hello, this weekend i held a bake sale through the Moveon.org fund raising champaign "Bake for Change", here in Queens, New York, serious Clinton County. It was lots of fun, and lots of people volunteered, we even managed to raise some cash ($240 dollars or slightly less than an nanosecond of t.v. time). It was great being out on the street, join me below for some not so earth shaking thoughts and some pix of the folks who came out to help Obama and Moveon.org
First things first, we found lots of supporters. However, i think we have a long ways to go with low information voters. Although not many people here aren't seriously considering McCain, expect the four asshats in the muscle car that kept driving by screaming McCain, (there's political discourse for ya), many people here seemed luke warm, but again this is Clinton County. IMHO, we need to get up and interface with the low information folks to get them more fired up about Obama.
That said, I was really impressed by the moveon.org volunteers, they all had broad and deep knowledge of the issues! And the cookies, brownies and cakes were great.
I encourage everyone here at dKos to meet up in person with like minded people, it's very invigorating!
Ok, so on to the Bake Sale, first we set up in front of a library (because it has bathrooms, free wifi, gets more street and foot traffic) and the library staff EVICTED us, gee so much for free speech. My mom, who was helping out, suggested setting up a small table with McCain signs, but no one could stomach it. So, off we went, table in tow, to our new location, across the street. Oh well.
Once we settled down at the new spot, we sold us some bake goods. Some people just wanted a sugar fix, others wanted to help moveon, one guy pulled over and donated 20 bucks, and a few good people just give a few dollars.
These Brownies with Obama flags were a real hit, just had to warn people not to eat the flag.
We had a few people come by who clearly wanted to inform us how wrong we were for supporting moveon.org or obama or both, but that was ok, no one was going to change their positions, but at least we were talking about something beyond gossip and the weather.
I just wanted to say to anyone one was on the line about going out in public and supporting Obama, that personal interaction is valuable, for the supporters to get to know one another and feed off each other and for the general public to see that a bunch of people were willing to stand on a street corner on a hot day when they could otherwise be relaxing is important, and the general public, for the most part, are friendly. So go forth and Bake!
