In the end, our elected representatives swear only one thing.
They don't swear to end the war, they don't swear to provide us with healthcare, they don't swear to increase the minimum wage...
They swear to protect and uphold the constitution.
That's it. That's all. Guess the founders were purity trolls.
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter."
Do I want McCain to lose? Absolutely.
But the FISA debacle is a clear violation of the one and only oath that our representatives are required to undertake before taking power.
If we allow our representatives to ignore their oath and ignore the constitution, then really we have fully embraced the notion that the constitution is "just a goddamned piece of paper."
