It is early on July 4, 2008, and on this Independence Day I have taken a step back and pondered what it means to be an American and what America will be like in the future. I wondered how my life and my actions would affect the future lives of my children and grandchildren. It made me categorize some things and I have placed them in the Bad America, Good America, and Truth lists below.
Good America –
- I have more access to food than most Africans could possibly imagine.
- I can call my President a retarded fool (it’s true) with no repercussions.
- A black man is going to be the next President of the United States.
- I have Satellite Radio, Satellite TV, and high-speed Internet, and I still read books at a record pace.
- I can tell people I don’t believe in God and the worst I get are dirty looks.
- My wife does not have to dress modestly, so as to prevent the impure thoughts of others.
Bad America –
- Despite an increase in education, availability of transportation, and free flow of information nationwide, we are less free as Americans now than we ever have been.
- Only a millionaire, Christian male can be President of the United States.
- There is a war going on, with American soldiers getting killed almost daily and this is important enough to rate two minutes per week on news broadcasts. Maybe if Britney Spears was shaving her head in Iraq it would get more press coverage.
- Children went to bed hungry tonight in the richest country in the world.
- 100 years ago, Tom Tancredo would have had rocks thrown at him for being a dirty Italian immigrant. Today, somehow, he is white.
- Free speech zones no longer include all of America.
Truth –
- A baby’s laugh is the most wonderful sound in the world.
- If there is a God, he/she has special plans for Pat Robertson, John Hagee, and Rod Parsley.
- Despite everything that has befallen her, America is still the greatest country in the world.
Feel free to add to or comment about my lists. Have a fun and safe 4th.
