For those looking for something to do in Austin on Wednesday evening, I have perfect suggestion. (Ahem) As a resident of Austin, I would like to cordially invite you to an evening of music on Wednesday, July 16th, from 9 to 11 pm.
We Austinites brag that we are the "Live Music Capital of the World". I've been making my living here as a musician for a long time, and some of my friends and I will be playing for you early arrivers. The venue, The Hideout, is within walking distance of the Austin Convention Center, near the corner of 7th and Congress, in the heart of downtown Austin. It's a coffee house, owned by Greg Nelson (a really nice guy).
Presenting their original music will be Steve Brooks, Bill Colbert, Jan Seides (Hey! That's me!) and The Therapy Sisters. The songs will cover a wide range of subjects, from the political to the humorous to the haunting. Details below.
Steve Brooks Steve's a songwriter of many faces. First and foremost, he's a classic storyteller. In the mold of John Prine or Guy Clark, he captures people, places and emotions with unforgettable images. Then again, he's a master of the topical song. In 1998, he wrote a song a week for nationally-syndicated Hightower Radio. Finally, he's a humorist, five-time winner of Austin's O.Henry Pun-Off. His newest CD, "Brooks vs. Bush" will be available.
Bill Colbert Bill is a native Texan Singer/Songwriter from San Antonio who moved to Austin in 1976 from his not so illustrious college studies at Texas Tech at the height of the Texas Outlaw Country scene. The move was to allegedly finish his degree in English, but the hidden agenda was to dig in and work even harder on his real love, songwriting. By 1979 he had succeeded in signing on with the now defunct Moon Hill organization, which managed and handled publishing for many of his favorite writers and main influences, B.W. Stevenson, Bill Browder, Rusty Wier and Michael Martin Murphy. Early on he shared stages with, opened for and entered competitions with the likes of Robert Earl Keen, Darden Smith, Lyle Lovett and Lucinda.
I'm Jan Seides and I'm so excited to finally be going to Netroots Nation after two years of being envious of my friend, Janet Strange -- she was in Las Vegas and Chicago. I've been lurking here since soon after the 2004 election. I write and sing original, lyrics-driven, songs (I've even won an award or two!) that I like to think combine uptown sophistication with down-home truth. I play here in Austin, and all over the rest of the country, wherever they'll have me.
The Therapy Sisters Austin’s Divas of Dysfunction are now accepting new clients. Maurine McLean and Lisa Rogers, long-time Lone Star lampoon artists, travel the country co-facilitating "group sessions" and demonstrating that music and laughter are the best medicine. This is one HMO (Happening Musical Opportunity) you’ll want to join. If psychotherapy were this much fun we’d all have our mental health.
All that is happening at The Hideout Coffee House 617 Congress Ave, (512) 476-0473, on Wednesday evening, July 16th, from 9 - 11 pm. If you don't come, expect me to come up to you at Netroots Nation to find out why not :-D
