The head of the Federal Communications Commission reported late Thursday that he was recommending harsh punishments for Comcast as a result of the company's violation of net neutrality practices. The unfair blockage of Internet access caused a flood of criticism to come at Comcast, one of the largest Internet service providers in the country, and this site was one of the main sources of that criticism, which almost certainly caused this decision.
More below the fold.
Kevin Martin, chairman of the FCC, said this to the Associated Press late on Thursday:
"The commission has adopted a set of principles that protects consumers access to the Internet," the commission chairman, Kevin J. Martin, told The Associated Press late Thursday. "We found that Comcast’s actions in this instance violated our principles."
This potentially precedent-setting move is precisely the solution that many on this site have been hoping for. The FCC is poised to announce their planned punishment of Comcast later today, but Bits, the tech blog at the New York Times, expected that the commission would, for starters:
...order it to stop the blocking, tell the commission how and how often it blocked file transfers and disclose to consumers its future plans for managing its network.
I will update later today once we learn more.
