Okay, I tried to contact the recommended diarist, but they haven't left a comment in over two hours, and this needs our attention. As soon as they update, I will remove this diary, but this is HUGE news.
Tomorrow's WaPo FRONT PAGE article is entitled: McCain Charge Against Obama Lacks Evidence
Its lede:
For four days, Sen. John McCain and his allies have accused Sen. Barack Obama of snubbing wounded soldiers by canceling a visit to a military hospital because he could not take reporters with him, despite no evidence that the charge is true.
It only gets better:
The attacks are part of a newly aggressive McCain operation whose aim is to portray the Democratic presidential candidate as a craven politician more interested in his image than in ailing soldiers, a senior McCain adviser said. They come despite repeated pledges by the Republican that he will never question his rival's patriotism.
And it includes the truth about the fake McCain ad:
The McCain campaign has produced a television commercial that says that while in Germany, Obama "made time to go to the gym but canceled a visit with wounded troops. Seems the Pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras." The commercial shows Obama shooting a basketball -- an event that happened earlier in the trip on a stopover in Kuwait, where the Democrat spoke to troops in a gym before grabbing a ball and taking a single shot. The military released the video footage.
It also includes the truth about the trip:
A reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding Obama's decision not to visit Landstuhl, based on firsthand reporting from the trip, shows that his campaign never contemplated taking the media with him.
You need to read the whole thing, because it contains the greatest smackdown of McCain that I have seen in the traditional media outside of Frank Rich's op/ed columns.
Updated Screw it, we'll do it live! I'm not deleting, we need as many diaries dedicated to accurate media reporting as we can get on the rec list. (Also, I was told not to...)
Updated x2 As suggested, when will Sen. McCain apologize to Sen. Obama? And will the RNC stop citing a retracted Lynn Sweet post? Do they actually feel shame?
Updated x3 Via renior, NYTimes is running with this story too. It appears that it's going to be in the "Politics" section. IMHO, the NYTimes calls McCain on some of his bs, but not enough.
Updated x4 I really look forward to the discussion of NYTimes' "Inside Professor Obama's Classroom". That has nothing to do with this diary, but really, reading Sen. Obama's Exams makes you realize how broad his intellect it. Also, I started a blog yesterday. So far, my dad likes it!
Update x5 Via Teach53, I see that the NYTimes tries to make up for its poor reporting with an editorial "Low-Road Express". It still leaves a lot to be desired, but my favorite part is the last:
Many voters are wondering whether a McCain presidency would be an extension of Mr. Bush’s two disastrous terms. If the way Mr. McCain is running his campaign these days is an indication, Americans don’t have to wait until next January for the answer to that one.
Update x6 Go here too see the front page. You'll notice a huge picture of ... Sen. Ted Stevens next to the article.
Update x7 Karen Tumulty of Swampland agrees with the WaPo:
This front-page account in the Washington Post is absolutely consistent with what I know, based on my reporting, about Obama's cancelled visit to Landstuhl. So how many more times are the McCain campaign and the Republicans going to repeat what is a thoroughly baseless charge?
