Last night, my right wing Dad called me. We were talking about the new job I accepted. Then he brought up DK.....
He asked me if I had ever seen DK. I admitted I read it all of the time.
To back track a bit [and to follow dairy rules, since this diary is admittedly not a substantial diary], my Dad is very right wing. I never knew this about him until recently, since we didn't discuss politics that much when I was little. I knew he usually supported repubs; my first vote was for Ford at my Dad's urging. After that vote, something went seriously wrong with me, and I turned liberal!
My dad supports those people who were 'guarding' the Texas/Mexican border--even though I grew up in Corpus Christi Texas and don't recall him ever making hostile comments about Hispanics. They were, after all, at least 1/3 if not more of the Corpus Christi population. He calls liberals 'crazy.' He loves O'Reilly and Rush. Ugh.
So, I quit talking politics with him at least 7 years ago, since we always got into shouting matches.
Back to his discovery of DK. He brought up Tony Snow, and said how awful it was for a site to be so hateful about a guy when he died. He said it was disrespectful to Tony Snow. I said, well, usually when right wingers die, posters express sympathy for the family, and I added that right wing sites do the same thing. I said that right wing sights even talk about lynching BO and they talk about lynching liberals. He expressed shock over this [well, apparently he hasn't been posting pro-violent comments on some right wing site!]. He brought up Edwards' immorality--I responded that McCain had done the same thing and left his 1st wife for Cindy. My Dad denied that JM had ever done such a thing.
So, I told him, look up DK if you want to see what's going on. As we were talking, I looked up some Tony Snow diaries to read to him. Some were nice, some weren't. But I still urged him to check it out.
Then I decided to send him an email with a link to a diary. Hmmmm, which diary would be good to 'expose' him to DK? Luckily, a great pootie diary by triciawyse [think I spelled that correctly!] had popped up, so I linked to it to let him know what wonderful people we really are!
Baby steps......
