I predict Colin Powell will introduce Joe Biden at convention. I have no inside information, but there are some very interesting signs that would point to this occurrence.
Although, I am not a fan of Colin Powell, I have to admit that the optics to non-political junkies would be absolutely amazing.
Follow after the jump for a brief diary explaining my rationale.
Number 1:
Joseph Biden is extremely close to Colin Powell if memory serves me correctly. I get the feeling that there is an anti-Bush administration former affairs shadow council doing everything in their power to get rid of the Bush regime. This tight knit group behind the scenes includes Biden, Powell, Lugar, and Hagel. All have done their part to amplify Obama. (How I would love to have Lexis-Nexis). I could see a scenario where this group is coordinating closely.
Number 2:
Wednesday night is called Securing America's Future. Now if you take this as a night on national security and military affairs, as opposed to economic security, a Colin Powell endorsement that evening would make a ton of sense. It certainly is in Biden's range, but he isn't exactly heavily associated with the national security/military regime. A Powell endorsement would an be interesting rationale for framing the evening in this manner.
In addition, this prime time line-up is major.
Clinton -> Powell -> Biden = Ratings Bonanza
Number 3:
I wouldn't put it past Powell to attempt to rebrand and reboot vis a vis Barack Obama. A major speech, creating a major bounce, would be intended to erase the stain on his reputation created by his UN speech. For me, this wouldn't do it, but I have to say it would be a good start.
Maybe he could apologize for his role in this disaster...ok...I am dreaming.
Powell has been awfully quiet the last few weeks. He has praised Obama on multiple occasions. And honestly, I think Bill Kristol sources were probably correct, and he was trying to get out in front of it.
Overall, I think there is a distinct possibility that this will occur. Powell could also endorse an Invesco, but I think Obama needs to be the only headline that evening. A Powell introduction of Biden would get you the most bang for your buck.
Can it happen?
P.S. The current Biden ad from McCain is why Reagan's 11th commandment is not a bad rule, and why needless primaries after mathematical completion have a negative impact. It is actually a good ad, much better than the trash he has been putting out lately.
