You know you're probably going to watch McCain Thursday night; maybe even turn the event into a drinking game. Well, why not actually enjoy watching the damn thing, build some community, and raise a little money, instead of just waking up on Friday with another RNC-induced hangover?
Stay with me, I think we may be onto something...
The plan is simple.
- Invite a few friends and neighbors over this Thursday night for the acceptance speech of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
- Have each person bring, say, $20 in singles (or a bunch of quarters).
- Before the speech, have the assembled group select a candidate, campaign, charity, relief agency, local animal shelter, etc, as the beneficiary of your impending fundraiser. (ActBlue would be a good, or Obama/Biden)
- Have each person pick a word or phrase to track during McCain's speech (e.g. & obvious, "my friends").
- During the speech, whenever the nominee utters one of the selected words or phrases, that person collects $1 (or a quarter) from everyone else. (If more than one person picks the same word/phrase, they become a team, with the contribution multiplied by the # of team members.)
- Award prizes (Obama swag?) to the first, second, last place finishers.
- Collect all the money, and donate it to your beneficiary.
- Continue drinking, if that's your thing.
If this idea catches on, I'll post a tracking diary Thursday night to see how much we raise.
