I have nightmares that we will wake up on November 5 to this headline: McCain defeats Obama in Close Race. Dems. add Few Seats to Existing Majority in House and Senate. Not Enough to be Veto Proof!
In their victory press conference, McCain outlined his foreign policy priorities; 1.) keeping U.S. troops in Iraq indefinitely, just like in Korea. 2.) Doing whatever it takes to stop the Iran goverment - including bombing if needed. 3.) Reinstituting the draft so the military has the manpower to fight several wars at once.
Palin added that the top domestic priorities would be to appoint Justices to the Supreme Court to overturn Roe V Wade for once and all. She also added that the Patriot Act would be enhanced and made more potent to fight the war on terror. Finally she added, she would support military in the streets to stop any demonstrations against the new draft.
This is a terrible nightmare and I have it several times a week and wake up shaking. I even have daymares when I am not sleeping.
Then I realize, just like Scrooge, that it hasn't happened yet. There is still time to change the course of history. We absolutely must not let those headlines become real. I'm 57 years old and this is probably the most important election in my lifetime; not to mention the biggest contrast in candidates since McGovern-Nixon.
We must sacrifice. We must give up the t.v. shows and instead make those critical phone calls, register new voters, go door to door, and donate. There are no do overs. We have 63 days - 9 weeks - to get it done. This may be the most crucial nine weeks in our history, as well as that of our kids and grandchildren. We must sacrifice our free time for the next 63 days and do whatever it takes to win.
I still remember Kerrys' concession speech in 2004 as I watched with tears running down my face. I still remember the Gore concession speech in 2000, again with tears running down my cheeks, and most vividly, I remember the McGovern concession speech in 1972 (it has been seared into my soul) I can probably recite it line for line.
Never again do I want to feel those feelings. Think of the happiness and joy we will feel when we win the Presidency and add many additional seats in Congress. It will be a new day in America. The sun will shine. The old stale faces and ideas will be replaced with fresh ideas and the best and brightest people. The future will be bright for us, our children and grandchildren. But only if each and every one of us take action for this 9 week sprint. We must do it to save the country and the planet.
