If you happened to watch "This Week with George Staphanopoulos" you had to come away impressed with Barack Obama's performance during his interview with George. But things changed when it was time for "The Roundtable", with George Will, Martha Raddatz, David Brooks, and Jonathan Capehart.
If you missed it, here's the link (be prepared to endure their nauseating fawning over Palin, but focus on the last 4-6 minutes, where they talk about McCain):
The Roundtable: Palin Post-Convention
During the discussion George Will says,
I wonder if John McCain will have the audacity to run, conceding the obvious, which is, the American people like divided government. If he is elected President, the Democrats will have perhaps the largest majority since 1937... the question is "Do you want me (McCain) there to temper these people or not."
David Brooks then countered with a good point, which was, that if John McCain wins, you can throw out his entire tax plan, because he won't be able to get it through a Democratic Congress. (And one must wonder, if McCain were to win, would ANYTHING get done?)
Jonathan Capehart then came back with:
Yes, the American people do like divided government, and to have John McCain there to temper the Democrats is something that could be very appealing, and it's probably the only thing that Senator McCain has to go up against the tidal wave that's out there. The American people want change, and that's why Senator McCain dropped the experience argument and went for change and reform.
Well, if keeping government divided is the only thing that John McCain has going for him in his battle to go up against the tidal wave of change, I'd say that he is in BIG trouble!
For one thing, I think that George Will and Jonathan Capehart are wrong when they say (as though it were an indisputable fact)that the American people like divided government! Why does congress get such a low approval rating? It's because nothing ever seems to get done! And why does nothing ever seem to get done? Well, it's because we have such a divided government!
Barack Obama's campaign has been built on the premise that Americans are TIRED OF divided government and partisan bickering! It's what Barack Obama has been talking about during his entire campaign! He's the one talking about the need to end divisions in our government! And that's why we need a Democratic President supported by a Democratic House and Senate! Only then can the changes in policy we so desperately need be put into action!
The American people finally have a chance to put into place a government that will work together for the benefit of average Americans everywhere! In this historic election we can elect a Democratic President who will be able to work with a Democratic House and Senate! Divided government can be a thing of the past!
