I’ll admit it. The polls drive me over the edge. I read just about every single analysis I can get on them and just about every comment as well. Sometimes I can’t even get to sleep because I’m so keyed up at night (menopause doesn’t help with the shut eye either).
Frankly, it’s just dumb ass not to recognize we’re taken a hit. Now you can attribute that to Palin or to McCain or to Rick Davis or to the Gods or Goddesses, or any and all of them, but the fact remains the same.
What is yet to be seen, however, is what we intend to do about it. We can fume and bitch and get scared or just plain old give up…
OR….
We can take it to them.
I live in a Republican County in the North Carolina mountains. Well, it used to be a Republican county. Years back, we finally decided to quit losing elections like we had for decades and win some for a change. Those of us who live here have learned the game well from our Republican opponents. We know you never leave a charge unanswered, you define the playing field, you never forfeit an opportunity, and you keep it simple. We played lean and mean and we won a race here and there, never giving in, never giving up, and then, in 2006, we creamed the bastards bigtime.
We (the campaign) need to get with the program.
- Oprah won’t let poor little sweet Sarah appear on her show? We can let that story dominate the news cycles for a week or better OR we can say,
“What a GREAT IDEA! Joe Biden wants to be there too, sitting in an armchair right beside sweet Sarah. There’s only one vice presidential debate, we all know that’s not enough and it’s certainly not fair to voters who want most definitely want to know more about Ms. Palin and Mr. Biden. We’re game!
But no hard questions will be asked, you say? It will all be softball? Only if we let it. In fact, Biden can directly ask serious and important questions of Palin himself! You say Palin doesn’t like this setup? Really?
Why on earth doesn’t Palin want to appear on Oprah anymore?
- Old man Charlie Gibbs giving Palin a chance to connect with voters?
WHAT A GREAT IDEA! Biden’s ready to go! It would be most fair to the voters if both candidates were on at the same time.
Palin won’t? Why not? What could she possibly be concerned about?
- Newest polls showing Palin taking away half of Obama’s lead among women? No problem. We just run TV spots and radio spots (more effective in rural areas) featuring rural, working, low-income women
Hi, My name is Minnie Jackson. You know me. I work at the diner up on main street. I always knew John McCain is a little strange, but now he acts like he thinks I’m stupid. Thanks to John McCain I don’t have a job, a chance or a future anymore. I’m not as dumb as he thinks. I’m not about to be “had” by the likes of Sarah Palin….
These women can come onto stage with Obama at the rallies. And let’s be sure to tell Joe Scarborough that Minnie Jackson of Ohio wants to be on his show next week. Annie Wilson the next day. Grandmother Wilson the day after that.
He won’t? Why not? Why won’t he let these woman speak?
- Obama losing ground in the polls?
The polls were wrong in 2006, and they’re wrong again. We aren’t worried. But the folks in rural Ohio are. They keep telling us that they’re already afraid they’ll lose their jobs tomorrow and they know they will if McCain is elected.
Every single surrogate should be repeating this line over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
- But poor little Sarah—hardworking successful woman who people say isn’t qualified just because she’s a woman.
“That’s right. She’s simply not qualified to be one heartbeat away from having to take over the Federal Government at a moment’s notice. Do Americans really want to give another Bush candidate like Sarah Palin a chance at the White House? Been there. Done that.”
- Palin now wants to come out of hiding? Biden should issue a press release tomorrow challenging her to a series of town halls starting next week. You say that will backfire because Obama wouldn’t take the bait when similarly challenged by McCain? That dog won’t hunt. Obama is debating McCain three times so the voters have the chance to size up the candidates, one of which is a town hall setting.
There is only one vice presidential debate. That’s not enough. The voters deserve better and have the right to know where Palin and Biden stand on the issues. What’s Palin afraid of?
Look, folks, these are just a few examples of, IMO, what we should be doing. No more “Well McCain is a fine man, but….” or “Sarah is a fine woman, but….” If we don’t think McCain and Palin are “that bad,” then neither will the voters. I think they're "that bad." Don't you?
The Republicans are great at making lemonade out of lemons, of figuring out ways to turn bad news into good news for them. We can do the same. Instead of complaining about the ball field we’re playing on, why don’t we suit up and play the game we’ve been dealt?
