Hey folks, for all the suddenly depressing polls and reports of McCain drawing huge crowds... for all the media who all of a sudden love the Republican ticket and all those white women who've forgotten that their bodies are theirs and not the government's...
Who cares? We're still gonna win!
I'll explain why if you just make a little leap of blind, blind faith with me.
So there are all these worried Democrats out there yelling "Oh no, we're losing in the polls," right? Or "Oh no, Sarah Palin's really riling up the conservative base." Or "Oh no, Obama's campaign is sitting with his thumb up his ass and reacting instead of attacking." Or "Oh no, the media loves Palin and is just eating up her 'maverick record' and even the few outlets that are reporting honestly are being deluged by those that collapse in a moist pile when they look at her pretty little face."
These chicken littles, or concern-trolls, or whiners - whatever you wanna call them - claim that we have to worry.
Well, fuck 'em. We don't need to worry at all. This election is in the bag! Here's why:
I can say that polls don't matter (except for the ones that do; see below).
I can say that we should win because Americans agree with Democrats on the issues (according to certain polls that happen to matter because it works with my argument).
I can say that people have had enough of eight years of Republican rule. Even though four years ago I said that people had had enough of four years of Republican rule, and we were therefore going to elect a Democratic president.
I can say, along the same lines, that Americans are smarter this year! They are less racist! They are more politically educated! They will vote with both their brains and their hearts this time! I can say all this even though I know we Americans are a fickle bunch and I have less and less faith in my fellow citizenry with each passing year.
I can say that Obama has more money. Obama has better grassroots support. Obama has more enthusiasm behind his candidacy (does he really, now?). I say this all, but with a sliver of concern in my mind that our voting systems are not impregnable and may be subject to manipulation that would require Obama to win by perhaps 10% in real votes for it to equate to a 1% victory in the "announced" tally...
Essentially, I can say that we should win, and that nothing should go wrong, and that's why we WILL win.
Kossacks, get your stupid ostrich heads out of the sand. We ARE in trouble. Maybe not knee deep in the shit yet, but ignoring the changing field (not just because of changing polls, but Palin's incredible and ridiculous ability to change her party's enthusiasm) is the same thing Republicans do: ignore what's happening and just pretend it will go away.
I know that this is vitriol - no solution. But I feel better having screamed, don't you?*
*Thanks, Michael Stipe.
