Sure, she seems to have everyone (republicans) excited now, but so did Geraldine Ferraro after she was nominated in 1984.
The New NBC/WSJ Poll came out today. It shows Obama up by 1 point. But that's not what interested me the most. In perusing the online article, what caught my eye was a point made about Sarah Palin.
" Clearly, Sarah Palin has hit a gusher," said Hart. "All of these things say that her initial introduction to American has been a very solid and positive introduction."
But Hart cautioned that her boost could be fleeting.
He recalled a similar bounce after Walter Mondale unveiled Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate in 1984. "The faster they rise, the steeper they descend."
Since I was born after the 1984 election, I decided to wikipedia search Ferraro to find out what led her to fail as a vp candidate. That's where I came across this.
The choice of Ferraro was viewed as a gamble, and pundits were uncertain whether it would result in a net gain or loss of votes for the Mondale campaign. In the days after the convention, Ferraro proved an effective campaigner, with a brash and confident style that forcefully criticized the Reagan administration and sometimes almost overshadowed Mondale. Mondale had been 16 points behind Reagan in polls before the pick, and after the convention he pulled even for a short time.[27]
Wow! That sounds an awful lot like Sarah Palin.
Gamble? Check!
Confident? Check.
Critical of opponent? yep.
Overshadows McCain? si
Bump in the polls? Yep.
So what did happen to Geraldine Ferraro? The next paragraph in wikipedia conveniently tells the story.
But by the last week of July, questions were simmering about Ferraro's finances, those of her husband, and their separately-filed tax returns. (While the Mondale campaign had anticipated some questions, the drawn-out vice-presidential selection process had not fully vetted her on this aspect.)
We already know that McCain's team had not fully vetted Palin before choosing her. We also know that there are a lot of Troopergate is just started to come to the attention of the MSM. Here's to hoping Palin turns out like Ferraro, a flash in the pan for a couple of weeks and then a complete distraction to the ticket.
