Hey everyone, this will not be a long diary filled with links. I promised my fingers would be bloody from knocking on doors today, and they are. I am exhausted.
But my 8-year-old son wouldn't let me be tired. He wouldn't let me give up. So we did the whole four hour shift. I am so proud of him.
Now, he has asked me to ask you for help. Our local Obama headquarters has asked us to host a debate viewing (my son calls it a DEBATE Party) on Friday night, and my son wants some ideas on what would make it fun.
Today my little 8-year-old son and I did an 11-3 shift of canvassing - our second time out - and at one point I could see he was tired, and I asked him if he wanted to quit after about 3 hours into it.
"No mom, this is important. I want to finish my job."
People, this little guy inspires me. He inspires everyone he meets. The older men who answer the doors look at him with such deep respect - a little boy out canvassing on a sunny Saturday afternoon. This little boy who used to be quite shy, spoke to the potential voters, and told them he wanted to end the war because he was afraid that he would have to fight someday.
Last week he talked an old woman into voting after she said she didn't think anything would change in her lifetime. He reminded her of her own grandchildren and that it makes a difference for them.
One person we met today was a lifelong Democrat who was so angry that Hillary was not the nominee that he said he would not vote - or if he did - he'd write Hillary's name in. My son almost convinced him that it would be like voting for McCain. When my son asked if we could come back and visit this man again next week, the man said he would welcome another visit from my son and would give this little boy another chance at convincing him.
Anyway, back to the point of this diary.
As you can see, my son is into this big time. He is thrilled to be having a DEBATE party, and wants some ideas on how to make it more fun for the people (whom we don't know) coming to our house. He is thinking of making them all signs to hold up during the debate.
So I am doing ask he asks and putting out a call for debate party ideas, and I also thought this might be a good way to reach out to all of you and ask you to contact your local volunteer office and offer to host some of the volunteers and staffers at your home to watch the debates together. Many of them are far away from home and wouldn't it be so much fun to have a house full of Obama supporters, pop up some microwave popcorn and watch together?
Hope so.
