I know we have a ton of important issues consuming our attention right now, but I hope that we don't forget about Proposition 8.
So far, I've ran into old high school friends' Facebook pages, who have joined groups that say "Protect Marriage: Vote Yes on Prop 8." I've gotten a friend request on Myspace from a Yes on Prop 8 group. Mormons have canvassed my neighborhood several times, leaving flyers and knocking on doors.
And I'm not alone. Several of my friends have reported several instances of neighbors going out of their way to talk to them about "protecting" marriage, and have been offered bumper stickers by pro-prop 8 groups in front of grocery stores.
Their ground game is formidable. We need to do something more to stop them from institutionalizing discrimination in California's constitution.
I'm a straight female in college, finishing my last year. If this passes, life will go on for me. But this is one of the biggest civil rights issues of our time, and I can't sit on the sidelines, only hoping that this doesn't pass.
We're up against bigots. It wasn't too long ago that these folks fought against interracial marriage. From Black and Mormon by Newell G. Bringhurst and Darron T. Smith:
Don LeFevre, a church spokesman, stated that interracial marriages generally have been discouraged in the past and until the Prophet [President Spencer W. Kimball] further elaborates on the subject, that remains our position.
They also opposed the Equal Rights Amendment, and now, they're target is on same-sex marriage. What rights of ours do they want to go after next?
The proponents of Prop 8 are massively funding their campaign, including huge financial support from Catholic and Mormon organizations.
