I just had one of the most bizarre, yet enlightening experiences of my life. A Jehovah's Witness came by about a month ago, and she talked to my daughter as I was not home at the time. Well, she just kept coming back, and I first met with her last week. Here's the weird part, she seemed so open-minded, I even told my Mom that I was surprised as to how knowledgeable and open she was. Haha. Right. I guess she choose today to show her true colors. I think she thought that if she said what we wanted to hear the first few times she was here, that we would let her continue to return. It was like she did a 180 degree switch on us! Last week she was acting all open minded and tolerant, and for some reason, she let loose with the insanity today! I felt rather deceived, as I wouldn't have wasted any time with her if this is what she portrayed right from the beginning. She told me that most people ignore her when she knocks on their door, even though she's met them before. I remember wondering why they would do that because she seemed so incredibly pleasant. Well, she seemed that way until she started talking today. Heh.
Let me say first off that I am not prejudice against religion or the people who represent or believe in religion. I personally believe in some type of creator, and I would say at this point in my life I am most comfortable with the Wicca religion. I was born and raised in a Peace of Christ church, better known as the UCC, and I think I know quite a bit about the Bible, religion, and unfortunately, I also learned about hypocrisy, gossip and back-stabbing. I know that most Christians are not like the right wingers, they may have their faults, as we all do, but they are not completely delusional. Ummm, at least I hope not!
Well, today I talked to the very first right wing creationist fundamentalist nutjob ever! I have never met a person this ignorant and closed minded in real life before. I know there are plenty on the net, but wow, it's a whole different ball game when you are talking to someone face to face. It's hard for me to imagine that anyone is actually this silly!
To sum it up, I was told that people have only been alive for 6,000 years. That all the bones from before that time are "not real"! That the Eden story is real. There is no possibility on life on other planets, nope, not even the slightest possibility. That Christ came back "invisibly" in 1914 to start picking out his administration. (That was a new one to me) And the most whacked out thing I think I have ever heard...that the dinosaurs all died in the flood!! You know, the flood that happened just about 6,000 years ago. WTF?
When I questioned some of this information, I was met with the constant repetition of "everything I need to know is right in here". Meaning, her Bible of course. When I explained some of the science to her, she ignored me and one time told me that science constantly changes and that most of the science has holes in it or it is just not right. Personally, I just think she was clueless as to what the facts were, I really do. It's amazing how intolerant she was, in fact, at one point she started reading me a passage about a troublemaker that kept questioning his teacher because he thought he knew more than his teacher. Geesh.
Finally, I told her she was welcome to believe what she wanted, but that I saw no reason for her and I to continue talking. That's when she showed me who she truly is. She got nasty, and she asked me in a very snotty voice if I believed in the morals of the Bible, or did I have a set of facts in "my science" to explain those away too. Wow.
I realized with incredible frustration that there is NO amount of history, science, or factual information that we can offer these people, they do not, WILL not hear it. It's frightening, and I was seriously thinking she needed medication the way she kept grabbing her Bible and declaring all she believes is right in here. Uh huh. I guess my point to this whole diary (aside from needing to vent about this insanity) is that we will never sway these people, I think we are wise to not even try, there are other people that must be more open to different beliefs...like reality.
The scariest thing I realized is that we could potentially have a VP in the White House who believes all of this! This cannot happen, it's like they live in a fairytale, and I don't know about you, but the last thing I want is for our children to learn this joke that they call creationism.
I don't want my child exposed to such silliness, and that's what I told this lady as I led her to my door. I respect her right to her opinion and beliefs, but I also find her to be completely out of touch with reality. I am determined to work harder than ever to make sure Obama is our next president! If any of you are lacking motivation to work for the election, just have a right winger over, you'll be calling voters the minute they leave! Hahaha..
